Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles project is a healthy eating initiative for primary school students across Ireland. It encourages schools across the country to grow fruit and vegetables and to learn about their nutritive value and food origin. Schools who register for the Incredible Edibles project will receive seeds and plants (free of charge) to grow a variety of fruit and vegetables.This year, the Department of Education and Skills and the Department of Health and Children, through the Healthy Ireland framework, have joined Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles patrons along with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Bord Bia and the horticulture industry to support this important healthy eating educational programme for primary level students.
RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS
All teaching resources for Agri Aware’s 2016 Incredible Edibles project will be available to download from Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles website, www.incredibleedibles.ie.The website will host curriculum-linked activity sheets, the Incredible Edibles log book, recipes and a growing chart to assist with the project. The Incredible Edibles website will also include a blog, with tips, reminders and facts about the project. Resources will also be made available 'as Gaeilge' for the first time.
We will also have an ‘Ask an expert hour’ each week (beginning May 2016), where teachers will have an opportunity to submit questions to a growing expert. Schools will be invited to submit a ‘Recipe of the month’ for inclusion in a newly developed Incredible Edibles recipe card series (online-based).
Schools participating in Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles project will have an opportunity to win a number of prizes this year, including a school polytunnel and a class trip to Family Farm, developed by Agri Aware and Dublin Zoo and a class recipe to be included on the Incredible Edibles website. In addition, all participating schools will be invited to attend the Bord Bia and Agri Aware farmyard at Bloom in the Park in June.
