Welcome to the Incredible Edibles School Project

Become an Incredible Edible Class/School!

 WHAT IS INCREDIBLE EDIBLES?
INCREDIBLE EDIBLES IS A CURRICULUM LINKED HEALTHY AND GROWING INITIATIVE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. IT ENCOURAGES SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO GET BUSY SOWING, GROWING, COOKING AND EATING FRUIT, VEGETABLES AND HERBS THROUGH A HANDS ON AND ENGAGING LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

The project aims to:
  • Educate students about growing fruit and vegetables.
  • Increase awareness of food origin, identifying and supporting Irish grown produce, while looking after the environment.
  • Highlight the importance of consuming 5-7 fruit and vegetables daily for a healthy balanced diet.

What better year to sign up than the National Year of Fruit and Vegetables, 2021!

Who can participate?
Any primary level classes. The project is targeted at 8-12-year olds (2nd – 6th class), but encourages participation from all ages, including home schools and special schools. Multiple classes can also combine to participate in Incredible Edibles, or the entire school can participate! The logbook is also available in both English and as Gaeilge.

Does this project relate to the curriculum?
This project is fully linked to the curriculum and a great way to incorporate the outdoor classroom – your gardens! – for both mental and physical wellbeing!

Core Primary Curriculum links:
  • Social, Personal and Health Education (S.P.H.E)
  • Mathematics
  • Social, Environment and Scientific Education (S.E.S.E)
  • Arts Education - Music and Drama
  • Physical Education

Early Years Curriculum Links (Aistear)
  • Well being
  • Identity & Belonging
  • Communicating
  • Exploring & Thinking

What do you get?
After you sign up for Incredible Edibles, we will post you a FREE box in February containing compost, large pots and biodegradable pots, and seeds to grow carrots, potatoes, strawberries, turnips, lettuce, chives, spinach.
*NEW* This year we are also introducing wildflowers to the pack and encouraging classes to bring more biodiversity into your gardens!

How much does this cost me?
NOTHING! We want every primary school in Ireland to have the equal opportunity and experience in sowing and growing their own plants.

What do I have to do?
Incredible Edibles is an interactive project that allows your students to get their hands dirty and learn by doing. We require your class to keep a logbook, to track their growing progress.

The 5 tasks include:
The logbook is composed of 5 tasks and will be due in June. If you are completing this project as a school or combined classes, you still need to submit only 1 logbook.
  • Task 1: Food Origin – learning about where different food comes from.
  • Task 2: Identifying Irish Fruit and Veg - Home or School Activity – visit a supermarket and take pictures of your students identifying Irish fruit and vegetables OR have students submit pictures of them identifying different types of Irish fruit and vegetables found in their kitchen cupboards and fridges at home.
  • Task 3: The Growing Element –  plant your seeds in your school garden and take pictures of the process.
  • Task 4: Cooking/Preparing - Home or School Activity – have students submit pictures of them preparing and cooking different types of dishes using fruits and vegetables.
  • Task 5: Healthy Eating Week - School and Home Activity – participate in Incredible Edibles Healthy Eating Week.

Head to the TASK section for more detail, tips and activities.

What’s in it for me and my school?
Besides creating fun memories with your students, enjoying the outdoors and teaching healthy eating habits, your school can be in with a chance to win overall prizes and be accredited Gold, Silver or Bronze Incredible Edibles Schools with a certificate and rosettes!

Check out the PRIZES section for more information.

Worried about Covid-19 restricting you from participating?
Not to worry, here's how we plan to help:
  • Digitally hosting information & resources on the website: For easy access in school or at home.
  • Teacher tutorials: Videos and advice on how to best complete the project and upload your work digitally in mass with ease.
  • Longer timeframes: Each task has a minimum of three weeks to complete, which is just a guidance timeline and can be completed at your own accord. The project starts in January and ends in June, so you have 6 months to complete it!
  • School Status Award Revised: See above
